Cape Palliser is a beautiful, if somewhat remote location, about a two and a half hour drive from Wellington. The drive itself is pretty good as you leave Wellington and drive up through Featherstone and past Lake Wairapa. When you get there, you are at the southernmost point of New Zealand’s North Island.

The drive along the coast road is spectacular and it is well worth going all the way to the Lighthouse even though the last Kilometre is a dirt road. There is a large colony of fur seals living on the beach in front of the lighthouse and you can get up very close to these guys – be careful though, not too close.

If you park at the beach just beside the lighthouse you can climb to the top for some useful exercise. Be warned though, there are over 250 steps to climb!

The view from the top is spectacular. I took these shots using my Fuji Finepix, so I just let the camera do the work.

You can get close to the seals and get some nice photographs without any difficulty.

The day I traveled there was quite sunny with very little wind, but even so, the waves were big enough to make for interesting shots.

If you have a day to spare, it is well worth the trip!
