On the way from Wellington to Cape Palliser you pass through the fishing village of Ngawi. This is a unique and fun place to visit as the beach is full of bulldozers, all in bright colours of red, blue, pink yellow and whatever took their owner’s fancy!

The locals came up with this novel idea of getting their fishing boats into and out of the water, as there is no pier or wharf, and the beach is steep and regularly has heavy surf! The bulldozers use trailers with a long steel beam between the trailer and the boat. It is fun to watch them launch and come back onshore.

The area around here is popular with surfers and there are plenty of seabirds around!
